 The Peekers PRICE: $12.00 ITEM #: PTV747 RELEASE DATE: March 24th, 2009 THE EXCITING INFO: Once upon a time there were four lovebirds (Michael, Aubre, Brittney, and John) who spent every day so high in a tree that no one could see them. They named themselves after a fictitious Japanese band, The Peekers, and happily wasted days together writing sweet, simple love songs on acoustic guitars, harmonizing their word-worlds into dreamscapes. This “double couple” was the dear, psych/country/folk love child of four friends and nothing more. Things changed when mutual friend, Jordan, moved home from college with an electric bass in hand, expecting to play with John and Michael’s previously abandoned act, The Big Positive. Instead, he brought the electric low end flow to the Peekers with tones that laid the foundation for electric guitar and organ. The Peekers added percussionist Jeremy in late 2007. Finally the Peekers had created the foundation they needed for liftoff. Songs developed depth, but still lacked locomotion. They soon found themselves with greater and grander songs thus, leading to the public birthing of the Peekers. “Life in the Air” was recorded in Athens , Ohio with Eddie Ashworth. It’s a universe tripped up in bright guitars, sugary harmonies and an insatiable appetite for the classics, mind expanding additives, and relentless love.
 Golden Boots PRICE: $10.00 ITEM #: PTV745 RELEASE DATE: January 27th, 2009 THE EXCITING INFO: Golden Boots is an alt-alt country band from the American Southwest, home to open spaces, Roy Rogers, and the Hydrogen Bomb. Born seven years ago, despite pleas to preserve the health of the mother, Golden Boots has managed to win over the jaded and faded from Tucson to France. Their warped and fractured mixture of psychedelic rock, folk and country has drawn comparisons to Alex Chilton, The International Submarine Band, Beck, and the Monkees. Their newest full-length album, entitled "Winter Of Our Discotheque"- is an inside/outsiders art project of true Itinerant Roots music that examines American themes of lackadaisical paranoia. True to form, the material honors both the creative acts of song writing and the glorious mistakes, drunken or not, that add their beautiful destruction. A seemingly more refined vision of Golden Boots' hook laden, future-as-now confused melancholy pop, this album attempts to walk that fine line between malt liquor and Malbec, between strip malls and malls... a self induced field recording sobriety test.  The High Strung - Ode to the Inverse of the Dude PRICE: $12.00 ITEM #: PTV748 RELEASE DATE: April 21, 2009 THE EXCITING INFO: When producer David Newfeld (Broken Social Scene, Los Campesinos!) agreed to helm the latest High Strung album, a strange/wonderful meeting was set to take place. In the height of a brutal Canadian winter, the High Strung brought a decidedly different batch of songs with them to the small church-studio of the legendary indie producer. Josh Malerman (songwriter) has written his first group of "personal" numbers, songs that addressed bizarre psychological states as well as revealing/comforting ideas of a man turning himself "inside out" - the idea of celebratory self-examination. Ode to the Inverse of the Dude sounds a lot like what it's about; there's no doubt Newfeld stretched a band who was ready to be stretched and the outcome is a fantastic/blissful proclomation. Ode... is an exploratory album, combining dreamy sounds and lyrics with the magnificence of the rock band that the High Strung is. The album is an honest original, but it's not a puzzle, it's a matter of heart. Songs like "Guilt is How I'm Built", "Standing at the Door of Self-Discovery", and "Out of Character" not only adhere to the theme but feel and sound like a genuine self-evaluation where as the subject is equal parts excited and frightened to discover what he has. Derek Berk and Chad Stocker, one of the country's most colorful/dynamic rhythm sections, do not dissapoint as they bring to life this coming together of wonderful artists. This record is a musical/pyschological triumph for both a producer who has worked his magic into the hearts of millions and a band who gets better with every album.
 THE HIGH STRUNG - "MOXIE BRAVO" Vinyl PRICE: $12.00 ITEM #: PTV746 RELEASE DATE: October 21, 2008 THE EXCITING INFO: The High Strung's road-band lifestyle may be Nuggets-era retro, but Moxie Bravo, the sophomore effort by the Detroit-via-Brooklyn three-piece, is thoroughly forward-looking. Moxie Bravo's guitar hooks, well-crafted three-part harmonies and sprawling song structures can recall Village Green-era Kinks, Brian Wilson, or the Zombies, but the High Strung's sensibility links them more closely to contemporaries like past tourmates the Rosebuds and Brian Jonestown Massacre. Moxie Bravo's tightly melodic songcraft is part Motown, part Grandaddy minus the robots, with psychedelic guitar interludes recalling Built To Spill's best and power-pop choruses that could make Teenage Fanclub jealous.
THE HIGH STRUNG - "Get the Guests" PRICE: $12.00 ITEM #: PTV716 RELEASE DATE:May 15th, 2007 THE EXCITING INFO: The High Strung did not set out to write and record its "defining" album but, call it an accident or dub it luck, it has. Get the Guests is surely one of the most original albums released in 2007, and some of its wonder lies in the fact that it doesn't sound like a band trying to do anything ...it just sounds like a band that is. In all aspects, Get the Guests is a far cry from the band's previous two releases (These Are Good Times and Moxie Bravo), but it also makes you listen to those albums and think, "ah, now I see where they were headed this whole time." Character sketches have adorned the band's canon before, but never as much as they do now. "Rimbaud/Rambo" introduces a narrator trying to decide which titular man is a better romantic model, while "The Curator" exposes a malicious museum curator covering the museum walls with his own work. The harmonies are striking, the bass and drums are creative as hell, and Josh Malerman's voice is as unique and convincing as it's ever been. The High Strung's self-abusive tour schedule took them to sixty libraries last summer, a juxtaposition documented by NPR's This American Life and an irony not lost on the hundreds of teens who got to see them for the first time. Bob Pollard called the band's 2005 release Moxie Bravo a "masterpiece" ... a sentiment that frightened the members into thinking that they might not be able to do better. But with these 17 songs on Get the Guests, they surely have!
 THE HIGH STRUNG - "MOXIE BRAVO (Redux)" PRICE: $10.00 ITEM #: PTV714 RELEASE DATE: February 13th, 2007 THE EXCITING INFO: Moxie Bravo is a sneaky record. If it were playing in the background, or blasting at the bar, a listener might mistake its energy and bombastic sound as a hell of a party album. But if that listener were to allow their ear to fasten onto the songs the record offers... he/she would discover the High Strung are onto something wholly unique. The High Strung is not garage. They do not have a bluesy bone in their bodies and Moxie Bravo reflects that. Josh Malerman, the band's singer and writer, alternates his lyrics between Lewis Carroll-ish character sketches and songs about sexual triumphs (victorious because the narrator is often confused by the situations he overcomes and, as drummer Derek Berk says, "you arent brave unless you're afraid of it first"). Musically, the band is clearly led by their rhythm section. Chad Stocker plays a lead bass and Berk matches him. But the High Strung are a SONGS FIRST band and it is impossible to form an opinion on them without considering their subject matter. Also, it's worth mentioning. Bob Pollard of Guided by Voicdes called this album "a masterpiece, every song is perfect".

After their 2003 debut The Meter Glows they return with this year's Roomful of Lions: a cathedral of color noise & conversation -- fractured human history mixed with fractured human relations. Where Meter was dense, Lions is expansive, providing a grander sonic architecture for the band's songs -- themselves offering a more nuanced and ambiguous moral universe. Subjects range from a mutinous Nazi plot to assassinate Hitler ("Abwehr"), a 15th Century saint ("Casimir"), Marvel comics ("Silver Agers"), and a childhood bully ("Lights"). No matter how far out they go, the songs are of a piece and describe a world not too dissimilar to our own, full of passion and death and birds and thieves and love and "men who casino." With three previous self-produced-self-released albums, Youre My Lover Now is their first LP on Park the Van Records Recorded in a warehouse in West Philadelphia, Youre My Lover Now (Mixed by Nick Krill of the Spinto Band) is as singular and strange as the location it was created in. Its an emotionally absurd vision of the mundane with inspiring build-ups and depressing let-downs. To describe the album let's say this: Take the actual title, "You're My Lover Now", and mix it with the scrapped working title, "DERANGED!!!!!!!", and that pretty much sums up the feeling and sound of the album. One of my favorite new bands is Phillys The Teeth; they sound a lot like early Kinks records. Some people compare the music of the Teeth to The Kinks, David Bowie, Talking Heads and the movie “Punch Drunk Love”. “Carry the Wood” was recorded on a 16- track recording device in a garage/barn and they took their sweet time recording it too. There are a lot of harmonies and a lot of exciting sounds on this album. It’s kinds of scary and uplifting at the same time. The Teeth are very musical. Carry the Wood is your formal introduction to your new favorite band.

Words stricken by personal heartfelt experiences, guitars so drawn out that it sounds like the last melody you'll ever hear, and topped off with a light heartedness that leave you in the end, yes, there is an end, knowing that at the end of the day everything will be fine.
