PEPI GINSBERG - RED
PRICE: $10.00
ITEM #: PTV727
RELEASE DATE: April, 22nd, 2008
THE EXCITING INFO: Lyrically, an emotional freewheelin’ journey, a timeless wisdom expressed with a playful cadence that’ll trip up your expectations, still backed by an underlying groove that shakes your knees and nods your head and lifts your smile. An immediate sense of that unexplainable feeling that engulfed you by 70’s queens like Joni Mitchell or Patti Smith. All reference points aside though, Pepi Ginsberg is a true original, and this decade has been begging for the uniqueness her voice brings to the current musical tapestry.

Pepi's debut album, Red, was produced by Scott McMicken.

TULSA - I WAS SUBMERGED
PRICE: $8.00
ITEM #: PTV726
RELEASE DATE: October 9th, 2007
THE EXCITING INFO: I Was Submerged is the latest EP from Boston's Tulsa. As comforting and timeless as its songs essentially are, they retain a certain melodic eeriness about them that could leave you feeling unsettled, were they not so impeccably crafted. A dreamy concoction of reverberated vocals and sepulchral guitars layered upon fervent percussion. The most defining touch: perhaps the asymmetrical tones of a Fender Rhodes, which cascade throughout the recordings.

Here's what David Fricke had to say about Tulsa in a recent issue of Rolling Stone: "I Was Submerged (Park the Van), the Boston quartet’s new record, have actual choruses and bridges. Singer-songwriter Carter Tanton also examines loss and reunion with refreshing bounce. “I’m in love for the first time,” Tanton crows in “I Feel Great,” with no apparent irony. “It feels great/Thanks for asking.” But his indie-seraphim voice is not of this world — set in the same alpine reverb where Jim James of My Morning Jacket lives — while the iridescent bloom of the guitars is a quality flashback to the clean-twang and country-fuzz blend of the 1968-69 Byrds. "

DR. DOG We All Belong (CD)
PRICE: $12.00
ITEM #: PTV712
RELEASE DATE: February 27th, 2007
THE EXCITING INFO: With all due respect to their previous recordings, it’s safe to proclaim to every man, woman, and child: “DR. DOG HAS ARRIVED!”

In the early part of 2007 as music listeners get real comfortable with this record, many of us may have to remind ourselves that it’s not 1967. This masterpiece is crafted from that same heart that folks like Brian Wilson, Neil Young, Robbie Robertson, John Lennon and Paul McCartney were masterfully culling from to create some of the most important songs ever recorded. Dr. Dog have written a classic that is not only timeless, but rich in soul, alive via rock and roll, at some times eerie with its familiarity, and wholly unique in sonic experimentation.

The production on “We All Belong” lends as much to George Martin as it does to Jeff Mangum. The songs written by the young gentlemen in Dr. Dog could be considered a grand homage to the brilliance of an era long gone, or even a wake up call to a generation of equally uninspired and tiresome indie rock. This is where many will find a new appreciation for Dr. Dog which can easily last another 40 years or more.

“We all belong to love.”

DR. DOG "Easy Beat" CD
PRICE: $10.00
RELEASE DATE: MARCH 15th, 2005
THE EXCITING INFO: the vinyl edition of Easy Beat is in the works!

Dr. Dog's "Easy Beat" was the first release on National Parking Records. This wonderful nine song record is the band's first offical release as well.

It’s easier to compare and contrast than it is to take something for face value and to love it and never let go. “Easy Beat” is the debut album from Philadelphia’s Dr Dog. Fans of My Morning Jacket, Neil Young, and The Band should pay close attention as they troop through the desert listening to “Pet Sounds”. Rarely does a record change the course of one’s life, well, until now.

THE HIGH STRUNG - "Get the Guests"
PRICE: $12.00
ITEM #: PTV716
RELEASE DATE:May 15th, 2007
THE EXCITING INFO: The High Strung did not set out to write and record its "defining" album but, call it an accident or dub it luck, it has. Get the Guests is surely one of the most original albums released in 2007, and some of its wonder lies in the fact that it doesn't sound like a band trying to do anything ...it just sounds like a band that is. In all aspects, Get the Guests is a far cry from the band's previous two releases (These Are Good Times and Moxie Bravo), but it also makes you listen to those albums and think, "ah, now I see where they were headed this whole time." Character sketches have adorned the band's canon before, but never as much as they do now. "Rimbaud/Rambo" introduces a narrator trying to decide which titular man is a better romantic model, while "The Curator" exposes a malicious museum curator covering the museum walls with his own work. The harmonies are striking, the bass and drums are creative as hell, and Josh Malerman's voice is as unique and convincing as it's ever been. The High Strung's self-abusive tour schedule took them to sixty libraries last summer, a juxtaposition documented by NPR's This American Life and an irony not lost on the hundreds of teens who got to see them for the first time. Bob Pollard called the band's 2005 release Moxie Bravo a "masterpiece" ... a sentiment that frightened the members into thinking that they might not be able to do better. But with these 17 songs on Get the Guests, they surely have!

Tracklist:

01. What a Meddler!
02. Maybe You're Coming Down With It
03. So Dry
04. The Baddest Ship
05. Raise the Bar
06. He's Got No Soul
07. Childhood
08. Rimbaud/Rambo
09. Watch Me Sustain The Early Days
10. She's Not Even Mad At You
11. The Curator
12. There Was No One Before You, There Was No One Before Me

THE HIGH STRUNG - "MOXIE BRAVO (Redux)"
PRICE: $10.00
ITEM #: PTV714
RELEASE DATE: February 13th, 2007
THE EXCITING INFO: Moxie Bravo is a sneaky record. If it were playing in the background, or blasting at the bar, a listener might mistake its energy and bombastic sound as a hell of a party album. But if that listener were to allow their ear to fasten onto the songs the record offers... he/she would discover the High Strung are onto something wholly unique. The High Strung is not garage. They do not have a bluesy bone in their bodies and Moxie Bravo reflects that. Josh Malerman, the band's singer and writer, alternates his lyrics between Lewis Carroll-ish character sketches and songs about sexual triumphs (victorious because the narrator is often confused by the situations he overcomes and, as drummer Derek Berk says, "you aren’t brave unless you're afraid of it first"). Musically, the band is clearly led by their rhythm section. Chad Stocker plays a lead bass and Berk matches him. But the High Strung are a SONGS FIRST band and it is impossible to form an opinion on them without considering their subject matter.

Also, it's worth mentioning. Bob Pollard of Guided by Voicdes called this album "a masterpiece, every song is perfect".

Tracklist:

01. Never Saw It As Union
02. Truce
03. On Your Feet
04. A Real Meal Ticket
05. N Over C
06. You Can Hurry Up
07. Seems It’s One Thing
08. Here It Comes Again
09. Sit Up Straight
10. The Luck You Got
11. Deck The Boy With Mettle And Manhood
12. Anything Goes
13. The Gentleman
14. Last Night Was…

CURSED: THE HEAD TRAUMA MOVIE PROJECT
PRICE: $10.00
ITEM #: PTV709
RELEASE DATE: October 10th, 2006
THE EXCITING INFO: Seriously creepy and deeply unnerving, Head Trauma explores the uncomfortable notion that just because a person may be paranoid, doesn’t necessarily mean that someone – or something – is not actually out to get them. In this engrossing horror chiller, drifter George Walker returns after many years to stake a claim on his deceased grandmother’s abandoned house. Struggling to build some semblance of a normal life for himself, George tries to clean up the place by day. But his nights are uneasy and plagued by troubling visions of a mysterious hooded figure. Despite his best efforts, things grow worse as the house is condemned and his nightmares refuse to remain in the dark.

And this is where “CURSED the HEAD TRAUMA music project” begins, right at the point where George’s nightmares cross over into his reality. Features music from Bardo Pond, Dr. Dog, The Capitol Years, National Eye, Brian McTear & Bitter Bitter Weeks, Steve Garvey (the Buzzcocks), BC Camplight, The A-Sides, Awol One, Greg Weeks (Espers), and many more. Reverse the curse – line up the soundtrack with the Head Trauma DVD for a special soundtrack experience.

NATIONAL EYE "ROOMFUL OF LIONS" CD
PRICE: $10.00
ITEM #: PTV704
RELEASE DATE: February 14th, 2006
THE EXCITING INFO: For nearly four years Philadelphia's National Eye have been exploring the coral canyons and caverns of sonic potential in their secret psychedelic music. After their 2003 debut The Meter Glows they return with this year's Roomful of Lions: a cathedral of color noise & conversation -- fractured human history mixed with fractured human relations. Where Meter was dense, Lions is expansive, providing a grander sonic architecture for the band's songs -- themselves offering a more nuanced and ambiguous moral universe.

Subjects range from a mutinous Nazi plot to assassinate Hitler ("Abwehr"), a 15th Century saint ("Casimir"), Marvel comics ("Silver Agers"), and a childhood bully ("Lights"). No matter how far out they go, the songs are of a piece and describe a world not too dissimilar to our own, full of passion and death and birds and thieves and love and "men who casino."

Produced by National Eye. Mixed by Thom Monahan of the Pernice Brothers (see Devendra Banhart, and Silver Jews)

The Teeth "You're My Lover Now" (CD)
PRICE: $10.00
ITEM #: PTV715
RELEASE DATE: parkthevan.com - April 24th, the usa - May 29th
THE EXCITING INFO: The Teeth are often compared to the Kinks, The Talking Heads, and the movie “Punch Drunk Love”. With three previous self-produced-self-released albums, You’re My Lover Now is their first LP on Park the Van Records Recorded in a warehouse in West Philadelphia, You’re My Lover Now (Mixed by Nick Krill of the Spinto Band) is as singular and strange as the location it was created in. It’s an emotionally absurd vision of the mundane with inspiring build-ups and depressing let-downs. To describe the album let's say this: Take the actual title, "You're My Lover Now", and mix it with the scrapped working title, "DERANGED!!!!!!!", and that pretty much sums up the feeling and sound of the album.

“One of my favorite new bands is Philly’s The Teeth; they sound a lot like early Kinks’ records. They have really great chord progressions and vocal harmonies and are one of the few groups that have impressed me with their writing.” –RJD2 on The Teeth, XLR8R Magazine

THE TEETH "CARRY THE WOOD" CD
PRICE: $10.00
ITEM #: PTV702
RELEASE DATE: July 5th, 2005
THE EXCITING INFO: The Teeth come from Philadelphia just like Dr. Dog, unlike Dr. Dog, the Teeth are fronted by some twin brothers, and like Dr. Dog, the Teeth can belt out three part harmonies better than you can.

Some people compare the music of the Teeth to The Kinks, David Bowie, Talking Heads and the movie “Punch Drunk Love”. “Carry the Wood” was recorded on a 16- track recording device in a garage/barn and they took their sweet time recording it too. There are a lot of harmonies and a lot of exciting sounds on this album. It’s kinds of scary and uplifting at the same time. The Teeth are very musical. Carry the Wood is your formal introduction to your new favorite band.

Nobody walks a beaten path or hammers out a steady beat over and over and over, and you can thank your lucky stars that Carter Tanton doesn’t either. He gives us some sense of bearing and we're all better for it. Words stricken by personal heartfelt experiences, guitars so drawn out that it sounds like the last melody you'll ever hear, and topped off with a light heartedness that leave you in the end, yes, there is an end, knowing that at the end of the day everything will be fine. Carter is your savior. We hate singer songwriters. Thanks to Carter Tanton we can stand by what we say and mean.
